Corrosion mapping is an advanced non-destructive testing method aimed at providing a detailed image of wall thickness loss and the distribution of corrosion damage on the surface of pipelines, tanks and other pressure components and equipment.

At ULTRARENT we use advanced, modern PAUT (Phased Array UT) ultrasonic techniques and digital tangential radiography, to obtain reliable information on the degree of corrosion wear and areas of increased perforation risk, including in hard-to-reach zones or under insulation (CUI). Testing is carried out by inspectors certified to EN ISO 9712, level 2 and 3.

In practice this means:

high-resolution wall thickness mapping using PAUT technique with C-scan recording, enabling comparison of results with previous inspections
the use of digital tangential radiography to assess internal and external corrosion and deposits in pipelines, including under insulation, without the need to remove it
instant availability of results thanks to digital imaging
greater detectability of corrosion loss compared with single point measurements
the ability to inspect tank shells and heads during service shutdowns
the ability to inspect pipelines without taking them out of service and removing the insulation
graphic presentation and digital archiving of test results

Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTT) is a non-destructive method that quickly determines wall thickness and the degree of wear in pipelines, tanks, steel structures and other components, without damaging them.

Supplement corrosion mapping with volumetric methods

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the tested component and creates an image of its internal structure.​
This makes it possible to quickly and reliably detect typical material discontinuities in castings and welded joints, such as cracks, gas pores, inclusions, voids or lack of penetration.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced NDT method in which a multi-element ultrasonic probe generates an electronically steered beam at multiple angles in a single scan, enabling a full volumetric assessment of welds, castings and structural components.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is an NDT method in which an ultrasonic wave is introduced into the tested component via a probe, and the reflected signals are analysed in order to detect internal and surface discontinuities.

Depending on the material, component geometry and risk of cracking, we also recommend surface testing methods:

Penetrant testing (PT) is an NDT method used to detect discontinuities open to the surface, based on the capillary penetration of a penetrant into cracks.

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels.

Corrosion mapping is an advanced NDT inspection that provides us with information on wall thickness and material loss, using the PAUT ultrasonic technique or digital radiography. Thanks to corrosion mapping, ULTRARENT is able to precisely determine the location and depth of corrosion.

These methods excellently detect general (uniform) corrosion, pitting corrosion, erosion, corrosion under insulation (CUI), corrosion of tank heads and shells, and the build-up of deposits that reduce the effective wall thickness.

The PAUT technique works well for mapping corrosion over large surfaces (shells, heads, walls), where there is good access to the tested surface and it is possible to achieve sufficient acoustic coupling. Tangential radiography is used for pipelines, where X-ray or gamma radiation allows wall thickness to be assessed without removing the insulation.

This depends on safety procedures and the specifics of the installation. PAUT testing should be carried out on components free of process medium, but without necessarily requiring their dismantling. Tangential radiography, due to the use of ionising radiation, requires designating a safety zone so as not to expose personnel to its side effects. However, it can be used while the installation is running, without the need to take pipelines out of service (on-stream testing).

Modern, advanced PAUT and digital radiography systems achieve high measurement resolution, making it possible to detect both general wall thickness loss and local pitting. Measurement accuracy depends on the geometry, thickness, type of material, and the appropriate choice of technique, equipment and personnel qualifications.

No – it is a very important element in assessing component thickness, but we usually supplement it with other volumetric testing methods such as: PAUT or RT, as well as PT/MT testing to detect cracks and other surface discontinuities. We select testing techniques to achieve the expected result.
