Hardness testing (HT) using the Leeb and UCI (Ultrasonic Contact Impedance) methods are portable, non-destructive techniques for measuring the hardness of metals, which can be applied directly to finished components, structures and installations.

which allow instant readout of results on many scales (e.g. HL, HB, HV, HRC) and easy documentation and archiving of measurement data.  Testing is carried out in accordance with EN ISO 6506, EN ISO 6507 and EN ISO 6508, by inspectors certified to EN ISO 9712, level 2 and 3.

In practice this means:

fast, non-destructive hardness assessment on finished components without the need to dismantle them,
the use of the Leeb method for large, massive parts such as: castings, forgings, shafts and structural components,
the use of the UCI method for welded joints, thin-walled components and small parts, where a small indentation and high sensitivity are required,
detection of areas with reduced hardness after heat treatment of components and welded joints, and differences in hardness between production batches,
the ability to measure on many hardness scales and correlate results with standard requirements and the client's specification.

PMI testing is a non-destructive method of material identification based on the analysis of the chemical composition of alloys, using XRF or OES spectrometry.

Testing methods:

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the tested component and creates an image of its internal structure.​
This makes it possible to quickly and reliably detect typical material discontinuities in castings and welded joints, such as cracks, gas pores, inclusions, voids or lack of penetration.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced NDT method in which a multi-element ultrasonic probe generates an electronically steered beam at multiple angles in a single scan, enabling a full volumetric assessment of welds, castings and structural components.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is an NDT method in which an ultrasonic wave is introduced into the tested component via a probe, and the reflected signals are analysed in order to detect internal and surface discontinuities.

PMI testing is a non-destructive method of material identification based on the analysis of the chemical composition of metal alloys using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry or optical emission spectrometry (OES).

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels.

These are portable, non-destructive methods for measuring the hardness of metals, used directly on in-service components, large structures, pipelines and castings, when laboratory methods such as the Brinell or Vickers test are impractical or too time-consuming.

The Leeb method measures the ratio of the impact body’s velocity before and after striking the surface of the sample. The harder the material, the smaller the energy loss and the higher the test result.

The UCI method uses a diamond indenter vibrating at an ultrasonic frequency. The change in frequency when pressed against the material corresponds to the size of the indentation, and thus to the hardness value obtained.

Hardness testing can detect hardness that is too low or too high relative to requirements, hardness non-uniformity after heat treatment, local tempering of the material near welds, and differences between material batches or different zones of a component. Hardness testing does not detect welding discontinuities or material discontinuities.

The Leeb method works excellently on massive, heavy components of sufficient thickness, where speed and repeatability are required. It is used for metallurgical products, castings and forgings. The UCI method is used for thin-walled components, small metal parts and hardened layers. The ultrasonic method is also used to measure the hardness of welded joints.

The indentation created during the test is very small (much smaller than in classic Brinell or Vickers tests), which is why the test is considered practically non-destructive and acceptable even for critical components.

No – hardness is one of the key parameters, but it does not reveal cracks or other material discontinuities. That’s why in most cases it is necessary to use NDT testing with volumetric methods (UT, RT, PAUT, TOFD) and surface methods (PT, MT), selecting the appropriate type of inspection to suit the specifics of the project and quality requirements
