according to previously prepared procedures and while ensuring appropriate testing conditions (lighting, access). In practice this means:

In industry there is no room for chance. The quality of welds, pressure components and steel structures must be confirmed reliably, repeatably and in accordance with technical requirements.

Surface testing methods:

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels.

Penetrant testing (PT) is an NDT method used to detect discontinuities open to the surface, based on the capillary penetration of a penetrant into cracks.

Volumetric testing methods:

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the tested component and creates an image of its internal structure.​
This makes it possible to quickly and reliably detect typical material discontinuities in castings and welded joints, such as cracks, gas pores, inclusions, voids or lack of penetration.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is an NDT method in which an ultrasonic wave is introduced into the tested component via a probe, and the reflected signals are analysed in order to detect internal and surface discontinuities.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced NDT method in which a multi-element ultrasonic probe generates an electronically steered beam at multiple angles in a single scan, enabling a full volumetric assessment of welds, castings and structural components.

VT testing is used to assess the quality and condition of a component’s surface and shape. It is carried out as direct and remote inspection. It is used as preliminary and acceptance inspection, as well as in the in-service diagnostics of steel structures and pressure equipment, where a quick assessment of accessible surfaces is key.

The best detected are surface discontinuities and visual signs of degradation: surface-breaking cracks, corrosion, pitting, mechanical damage and geometric non-conformities. Subsurface discontinuities generally require the use of volumetric methods such as UT or RT.

Direct visual testing means an uninterrupted optical path from the inspector’s eye to the tested area, while remote testing uses additional tools and devices (e.g. borescopes, videoscopes, cameras) to reach hard-to-access locations. Remote visual testing is essential when inspecting the inside of vessels, pipelines and other confined spaces where direct observation is not possible.

Often yes, provided the observation conditions required by the standard or procedure can be ensured. When geometry, shape or limited access make it impossible to meet the requirements, remote solutions (RVT) or other NDT methods are used.

The test result is normally described in a report together with the location and assessment of the discontinuities found, in relation to the required acceptance criteria. The report is supplemented with sketches or photographs. In the case of remote visual testing (RVT), the image is recorded using photo or video.

The VT method mainly detects surface indications and does not replace methods for detecting internal discontinuities. The effectiveness of visual testing depends on the test conditions, such as: lighting, viewing angle and access. The method is largely dependent on the competence of the personnel, which is why it is worth relying on certified and experienced staff.
