Vacuum box leak testing (LT) is a non-destructive technique for detecting leaks in welds and joints, where a pressure test of the entire system cannot be carried out safely or economically.

At ULTRARENT we use various types of chambers (flat, corner, segmented) and vacuum systems with safety valves and vacuum control, which allows us to quickly scan long sections of weld while meeting requirements for vacuum level, holding time and lighting. Testing is carried out by inspectors certified to EN ISO 9712, level 2 and 3.

In practice this means:

Effective location of leaks in tank bottom welds, shell-to-bottom joints, lap joints and fillet welds, where a classic pressure test is difficult or uneconomical
The ability to detect very small leaks thanks to the use of an appropriate foaming solution and a controlled vacuum level
An instant, visual result – bubbles in the chamber window field of view unambiguously indicate the leak location, making marking and subsequent repair easier
No need to provide two-sided access
Testing of fillet and butt welds on the bottoms and shells of storage tanks

In practice this means instant identification of even very small leaks, no need to fill the entire system with pressurised medium, and minimal impact on other work being carried out nearby

Leak testing is very effective at detecting leaks through through-wall discontinuities, but it does not replace a full volumetric assessment and does not detect defects that do not yet cause an actual leak (e.g. certain internal discontinuities).

An NDT method used to detect discontinuities open to the surface, based on the capillary penetration of a penetrant into cracks.

Supplement leak testing with other volumetric methods:

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the tested component and creates an image of its internal structure.​
This makes it possible to quickly and reliably detect typical material discontinuities in castings and welded joints, such as cracks, gas pores, inclusions, voids or lack of penetration.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is an NDT method in which an ultrasonic wave is introduced into the tested component via a probe, and the reflected signals are analysed in order to detect internal and surface discontinuities.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced NDT method in which a multi-element ultrasonic probe generates an electronically steered beam at multiple angles in a single scan, enabling a full volumetric assessment of welds, castings and structural components.

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels.

Penetrant testing (PT) is an NDT method used to detect discontinuities open to the surface, based on the capillary penetration of a penetrant into cracks.

The test involves applying a foaming solution to the tested weld, placing the vacuum box with its seal over the area, creating a controlled vacuum and observing through the window – the appearance of bubbles indicates a leak. It is used mainly on tank bottoms, shell-to-bottom joints, ship plating, and other structures that cannot easily be subjected to a full pressure test

The method detects through-wall discontinuities – cracks, lack of penetration, porosity and other defects that create an actual leak path through the weld or wall. It is not used to assess the shape or size of a defect inside the material, only to confirm that a given zone is tight or leaking under the given test conditions

The result is instant – the indication is visible during the test. The time depends on the length of the welds to be checked, the need to clean the surface, the type of indicator solution and how access to the tested zone is organised.

No – access from the side to which the vacuum frame is applied is normally sufficient. What matters is that the tested area can be sealed tightly by the frame and that the required vacuum level can be maintained for the required time.

In practice, a test report is used, identifying the weld sections, the test parameters (e.g. vacuum level in accordance with the procedure) and a description of the indications. If necessary, the result can be supplemented with photographic documentation of the leak location and a location map referenced to the drawing/ITP
