Penetrant testing (PT) is an NDT method used to detect discontinuities open to the surface, based on the capillary penetration of a penetrant into cracks.

At Ultrarent we carry out tests based on applicable standards, procedures and the client's quality requirements. We take care to ensure unambiguous interpretation, the correct choice of penetrant-developer system, and proper documentation of any indications. Well-planned PT testing minimises downtime of equipment and installations, and reduces the risk of misinterpreting false indications. Testing is carried out in accordance with EN ISO 3452, by inspectors certified to EN ISO 9712, level 2 and 3.

In practice this means:

Detection of surface discontinuities such as: fatigue and processing cracks, porosity
High sensitivity to fine surface cracks and discontinuities open to the surface
Used for testing non-ferromagnetic materials such as: austenitic stainless steels, aluminium or titanium
Testing of welded joints in pipelines, tanks and branch connections
Testing of castings, forgings, shafts, wrought products and CNC-machined components

Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels.

Volumetric methods:

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the tested component and creates an image of its internal structure.​
This makes it possible to quickly and reliably detect typical material discontinuities in castings and welded joints, such as cracks, gas pores, inclusions, voids or lack of penetration.

Digital radiography in NDT covers the DR (Digital Radiography) and CR (Computed Radiography) techniques, in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the component and an image of the internal structure is recorded by a digital detector or imaging plate instead of classic film.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced NDT method in which a multi-element ultrasonic probe generates an electronically steered beam at multiple angles in a single scan, enabling a full volumetric assessment of welds, castings and structural components.

Penetrant testing is one of the non-destructive testing (NDT) methods used to detect surface discontinuities. The penetrant testing method is often used for paramagnetic materials that cannot be inspected using the magnetic particle method, such as: aluminium, titanium or austenitic steel.

PT testing detects discontinuities that break the surface, such as: cracks, porosity and leak paths. The PT method does not detect internal discontinuities unless they are open to the tested surface.

In colour-contrast penetrant testing, indications are visible under white light as a red, contrasting “bleed-out” on the white developer. The fluorescent technique uses observation under UV light, which usually increases the test sensitivity and improves detectability, but requires more stringent environmental conditions (darkening, appropriate UV light intensity).

Yes, for standard penetrant testing, one-sided access is sufficient, provided adequate access is available to observe the surface after the developer has been applied. If access to the tested surface is limited, it may be necessary to use other inspection methods.

 

Two-sided access is required when penetrant testing is used to check tightness.

The test result is documented in a report along with the characterisation, location and assessment of the indications found against the acceptance criteria. Including a sketch or photographs of the tests performed is also good practice.

PT testing requires a clean, properly prepared surface and is not suitable for testing porous or heavily rough materials, due to the risk of false indications. The method is also sensitive to test conditions (time, temperature, lighting/UV intensity) and only detects discontinuities that are open to the surface.
