PMI testing is a non-destructive method of material identification based on the analysis of the chemical composition of metal alloys using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry or optical emission spectrometry (OES).

At ULTRARENT we use advanced, portable XRF and OES analysers, which allow inspections to be carried out in the field and results to be obtained instantly, compared with laboratory analyses, which delay manufacturing and assembly processes. Testing is carried out by inspectors certified to EN ISO 9712, level 2 and 3. <strong>Can PMI determine carbon content?</strong> Portable XRF analysers cannot detect carbon or other light elements, so XRF alone cannot distinguish, for example, between steel grade 304 and its low-carbon variant 304L. Where carbon content matters for acceptance, we use OES (optical emission spectrometry), which measures it directly. XRF analysis itself is carried out in accordance with ASTM E1476.

In practice this means:

effective identification of the chemical composition of alloys (e.g. Cr, Mo, Ni in duplex stainless steels)
instant on-site results without sample collection
inspection of pipelines, pressure vessels, industrial installation components and steel structures
verification of base material and filler metal against certificates

Hardness testing (HT) using the Leeb and UCI methods are portable, non-destructive techniques for measuring the hardness of metals, enabling testing directly on finished components, structures and installations.

Non-destructive testing

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method in which X-ray or gamma radiation passes through the tested component and creates an image of its internal structure.​
This makes it possible to quickly and reliably detect typical material discontinuities in castings and welded joints, such as cracks, gas pores, inclusions, voids or lack of penetration.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced NDT method in which a multi-element ultrasonic probe generates an electronically steered beam at multiple angles in a single scan, enabling a full volumetric assessment of welds, castings and structural components.

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is an NDT method in which an ultrasonic wave is introduced into the tested component via a probe, and the reflected signals are analysed in order to detect internal and surface discontinuities.

Complementary testing

Hardness testing (HT) using the Leeb and UCI (Ultrasonic Contact Impedance) methods are portable, non-destructive techniques for measuring the hardness of metals, which can be applied directly to finished components, structures and installations.

Penetrant testing (PT) is an NDT method used to detect discontinuities open to the surface, based on the capillary penetration of a penetrant into cracks.

PMI testing is a non-destructive method of verifying chemical composition, used to confirm the correctness of the materials and filler metal used in the manufacturing and modernisation process.

PMI identifies any deviations in the chemical composition of materials. The method allows the identification of the material grade and the content of alloying elements such as Ni, Cr, Mo or C, in order to compare them with the certificates provided by the manufacturer or distributor.

Unfortunately not. It allows verification of the chemical composition of materials, but does not detect discontinuities arising during the manufacturing process, such as: casting, forging, rolling or welding.

 

For a full integrity assessment, volumetric or surface non-destructive testing methods such as RT, UT, PAUT, MT or PT should be used.

Thanks to the use of portable devices, the inspection process is very fast and usually takes from several dozen seconds to a few minutes per measurement point, not including preparation and identification of the tested components. In addition, time must be allowed for preparing the test report.

No – for testing we use mobile, portable equipment which easily allows testing to be carried out on-site during assembly in hard-to-reach places. The surface prepared for testing should be smooth and should be cleaned of any contamination and traces of corrosion.
