For this purpose, we can use the currently available types and techniques of testing. Depending on the method used, NDT testing enables the detection of internal or surface discontinuities. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Detectability plays a key role in non-destructive testing and depends on many factors. A method that gives satisfactory results when testing one product may prove completely useless when inspecting another element.
The choice of the appropriate NDT testing method is always considered individually in relation to the type of product being tested and depends, among other things, on:
– the welding method used
– the grade of the base material
– the type of joint and its dimensions
– the shape of the finished element, surface condition, and access
– the type of heat treatment applied
– the applicable or agreed quality levels
– the expected types of welding discontinuities, their location, and orientation relative to the adopted reference point.
Depending on the class of the structure, which results from its level of responsibility, inspection is carried out using a single testing method or a combination of methods. NDT testing is an excellent tool for quality control of manufactured products.
